I listened to an emotional political actor who wants to be President on NPR talk about the huge violence done by the “high Velocity “ Military 223 fired by the horrid  AR15 at the last mass shooting, including  graphic details of body damage and bleeding out… Problem was it was all bogus.  Any history search will show the evolution of military rounds post WW2/Korea was deliberate to less lethal and more injury orientated rifle rounds in an effort to cause the enemy more problems dealing with wounded than dead. The Hot Varmint rounds of the 50’s were slowed down to create the 223 round the military adopted. The goal was to reduce felt recoil, reduce pack weight and increase wound to death ratio in favor of wounds. The M16/223  to M1/308 tells the story of success in every measure. The M16 at 7.5 lbs. w/ 30 rounds vs the M1 at 9.5 w/ 10 rounds. More rounds in the combat zone at less weight and more wounds. More lethal damage can be done with any number of commercially available rounds if that were the only consideration, want fewer deaths use the round designed for it.
